  •  Switzerland enshrines complementary medicine in the constitution

Brussels, 19 May 2009 - In a national vote on Sunday 17 May, the Swiss people voted in favour of a constitutional article for complementary medicine. 67% of voters supported the new constitutional article, making Switzerland the first country in Europe to set out authority in the constitution for the state and constituent states (cantons) to take complementary medicine into consideration in the public health service.

During the last few years complementary medicine has been politically marginalized in Switzerland. This vote was the result of a national popular initiative by the complementary medicine sector, including doctors, therapists, manufacturers and specialized traders, whereby Swiss voters can obtain a popular vote for a constitutional amendment if they collect 100,000 valid signatures within 18 months.

The Swiss Parliament availed itself of its right to oppose the proposers' constitutional article and suggested a slightly diluted form. On 17 May 2009, Swiss voters clearly approved the constitutional article proposed by parliament. The majority of voters per canton also voted in favour, which is a prerequisite for any constitutional amendment.

The Swiss vote reflects the growing importance of complementary medicine in Europe. 65% of Europeans report they have used complementary and alternative medicine, with 30-50% using it as self-support and 10-20% having seen a CAM practitioner in the last year. 150,000 doctors have taken training in complementary medicine in Europe.

Nand De Herdt, President of ECHAMP, the European Coalition on Homeopathic and Anthroposophic Medicinal Products, today welcomed this result, saying ‘The voice of the Swiss people sends a strong signal to the EU Member State governments that there is an urgent need to ensure better access to these therapies and improved availability of these medicinal products across the EU. It is time for the European institutions to fully acknowledge the important role these therapies play in the health care of so many European citizens. Complementary medicine should be firmly integrated into EU health policy'.from cybermed.it on 19.5.2009

  • The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) has "recycled" a three-years old study which found the presence of heavy metals and other questionable substances in a section of the analysed samples.

As much as EURAMA welcomes strict quality control, we also regret that this new report does not take into account the new developments...
